Fish Swimming At Top Of Aquarium. A good sign that you have a poor environment is if you find your fish swimming on top of the tank. I have 15 MalawI African cichlids mostly haps with a few mbunas and peacocks in a 60 gal tank with eco complete cichlid white sand substrate.
Alright so this is my first ever aquarium. This can happen if you have an excess amount of fish waste which will cause the water to become toxic and low on oxygen. More likely than not if you just got the aquarium recently and your fish are swimming near or at the top of the tank they could be gasping for breath while at the top.
So I had 3 platy fish in my tank for a week and last night one of them suddenly died and the remaining two kept swimming at the surface.
One evening while sitting in the very place where I am sitting now I turned and looked back at my aquariumand ALL of my fish were swimming at the top of the tank.
